Raising girls who are strong and confident can be such a struggle these days with gender stereotypes still so prevalent in the media and in everyday life. As a parent, I want to shelter my kids from that and to raise them as seeing girls and boys, women and men as equals, as being capable of doing the same things, achieving the same things, being valued in the same way.
Things are of course steadily changing, as is evidence by the millions of women and men alike who rallied together in support of International Women’s Day last month. The number of strong female characters on TV and in movies is growing each year as well, and I love how many of these have been picked up by Netflix. The shows and movies our kids watch can have such an influence on their view of the world at a young age, so it’s really important to me that Isabelle has strong female role models that she can watch whenever we allow her a little screen time. Here are my favourite three strong female characters on Netflix for toddlers and preschoolers:
Dora from Dora the Explorer . This is Isabelle’s current favourite show. Dora, the main character, is a heroic Latina tomboy who embarks on an adventure in every episode in order to find something or help somebody. Just the kind of girl you’d want your preschooler modelling herself after.
Emily Elizabeth from Clifford . A friendly, curious, and helpful little girl who happens to own the world’s largest dog (aka Clifford). She’s smart, talented, and not afraid to call people out on their B.S. (but in a nice way, of course).
Lilo from Lilo and Stitch . An oldie but a goodie. Lilo is a young orphaned Hawaiian girl who lives with her big sister Nani. She’s sweet, eccentric, and a bit of an outcast, but she’s also a bada*ss and and doesn’t like to be underestimated.
