Top 5 Places to Watch the Sunset in the Florida Keys

Florida Keys sunset in Key Largo | Happy Grey Lucky

The Florida Keys may be known for a lot of things (fishing, snorkelling, the 7-mile bridge), but for me the best thing about this archipelago off the southern coast of Florida are the breathtaking sunsets. The way that the group of island gently curves south west from Florida’s mainland means that you can catch a beautiful sunset from pretty much any spot along the Gulf of Mexico. That coupled with the clean air that has relatively low levels of moisture in the winter (allowing the light to come through so much more vibrantly), makes for one spectacular show. We watched all but one sunset during our visit and each one was more breathtaking than the last. I’ve put together my top 5 spots to catch the best sunset views below.

[ 1 ] Mallory Square, Key West . The south-western tip of the Florida Keys, aka Key West, has become synonymous with world-class sunsets. And the perfect spot to watch is Mallory Square. Yes it’s full of tourists and not exactly quiet (you’ll find street vendors, musicians, and food vendors aplenty), but you can’t beat the location.

[ 2 ] Morada Bay Beach Cafe, Islamorada . With tables right on the beach, this outdoor cafe provides a blend of Caribbean and American cuisine as well as live music while the sun sets. Grab an Adirondack chair and sip on a sangria to enjoy the orange, pink, and purple colours, all the while your kiddos can busy themselves playing on the beach.

[ 3 ] Sundowners, Key Largo . It’s not called “Sundowners” for nothing!

[ 4 ] The Island Fish Company and Tiki Bar, Marathon . It’s got the longest tiki bar in the Florida Keys, which basically means plenty of bar stools for you to enjoy the sunset from. If you’ve got kids with you, head to the pier to feed the local fish (and make sure to bring a few quarters for food).

[ 5 ] Snapper’s Oceanfront Restaurant and Bar, Key Largo . Since we spent most nights in Key Largo, it’s only fitting that I include two different spots for spectacular sunsets. Snapper’s offers delicious seafood and beautiful views (oh and plenty of options for your picky toddlers).

This is so timely!! I’ve just moved to Miami and will be visiting Key Largo next weekend for my Husbands birthday…I literally spent yesterday looking for the best place to watch the sunset on the last day of his twenties and after calling around and reading review online I’ve booked a table at Sundowners so very happy to hear it makes the top 5 of your list! I’m even more excited for our visit now!

I really love your blog! I’ve just started an Instagram page documenting our move to MIA and would love it if you could take a look at my pictures? I’m ‘Livvy.etc’ on Instagram!

Have a great Friday! X

Wow, so beautiful! It’s been a while since I’ve been to the keys myself but I remember those stunning sunsets
